A long-term study led by primatologist Crickette Sanz at Washington University in St. Louis reveals the first evidence of lasting social relationships between chimpanzees and gorillas in the wild.

Drawn from more than 20 years of observations at Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo, researchers documented social ties between individual chimpanzees and gorillas that persisted over years and across different contexts. During two digs in Zimbabwe in 2017 and 2019, a graduate student from Virginia Tech discovered and unearthed the fossil with the assistance of other paleontologists.

A new, early dinosaur has been found and named by an international team of paleontologists under the direction of Virginia Tech. The skeleton was discovered by a graduate student in the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences and other paleontologists over the course of two excavations, in 2017 and 2019. Astonishingly, most of the skeleton is still complete.

When it comes to showing affection towards people, many dogs are naturals. Now a report in the journal Ecology and Evolution reveals that the remarkable ability to show attachment behavior toward human caregivers also exists in wolves.

The findings were made when scientists at Stockholm University, Sweden, tested 10 wolves and 12 dogs in a behavioral test specifically designed to quantify attachment behaviors in canids. (Canids are members of the Canidae family of carnivorous animats, which includes domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, jackals, dingoes, and many other extant and extinct d...     Learn More ››

Female monkeys with female friends live longer

Key takeaways:

1.
Strength of female-female relationships. Female capuchin monkeys who are better integrated into social networks with other adult females tend to survive longer.

2. Social interactions are helpful. These include giving and receiving grooming, foraging nearby and helping each other in conflicts by fighting or making aggressive sounds and facial expressions.

3. Monkeys test their friendships. Researchers observed capuchins engaging in interactions that involve risky or uncomfortable elements — such as poking a finger into a friend’s eye socket — to test the qualit...     Learn More ››

More dogs in the neighborhood often means less crime

7 months ago (Tue, Jul 05, 2022 at 04:34 PM)

If you want to find a safe neighborhood to live in, choose one where the residents trust each other – and have a lot of dogs to walk.

In a study conducted in Columbus, researchers found that neighborhoods with more dogs had lower rates of homicide, robbery and, to a lesser extent, aggravated assaults compared to areas with fewer dogs, at least when residents also had high levels of trust in each other.

The results suggest that people walking their dogs puts more "eyes on the street," which can discourage crime, said Nicolo Pinchak, lead author of the study and a doctoral stud...     Learn More ››

When male buddies become less important than female mating partners

8 months ago (Thu, May 26, 2022 at 09:26 AM)

Close friendships among males are rare in the animal kingdom, as males usually compete for rank and access to females. However, male friendships can also be beneficial for male reproduction, as friends can provide support in climbing the rank ladder or defending females from other males. Scientists have now investigated the benefits of male friendships in wild Guinea baboons in Senegal.

Researchers Discover Dolphin Females Have Working Clitoris – “Surprisingly Similar” to the Shape in Humans

Image name: Dolphin.jpg Image size: 60kb Download.

Like humans, female dolphins have a functional clitoris, according to a study appearing in the journal Current Biology. The findings are based on the discovery that the clitoris-like structure positioned in the vaginal entrance of bottlenose dolphins has lots of sensory nerves and erectile bodies.

“The dolphin clitoris has many features to suggest that it functions to provide pleasure to females,” says first author Patricia Brennan, an assistant professor of biological sciences at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
